Article 24 of the UNCRPD
Article 24 of the UNCRPD requires that persons with disabilities are not excluded from the general education system on the basis of disability, that they can access an inclusive, quality, and free primary and secondary education on an equal basis with others, and that reasonable accommodations are provided to facilitate their participation. The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has been clear that Article 24 requires a move away from segregated special education toward fully inclusive mainstream education, a position that has significant implications for Ireland's current system of special schools and classes.
