The Goal of UDL: Expert Learners

The ultimate goal of UDL is not simply to make learning accessible but to develop what CAST calls 'expert learners' — individuals who are purposeful and reflective, resourceful and authentic, and strategic and action-oriented. Expert learners are not defined by high academic achievement in traditional terms, but by their capacity to set meaningful goals, access and use appropriate resources and strategies, and monitor and adjust their own learning. This vision of the educated person is deeply aligned with the goals of lifelong learning and active citizenship that underpin Irish educational policy.
