IB refines AI design principles around protection, shared responsibility and school governance — 23 September 2026
IB refines its AI principles after global educator feedback
The International Baccalaureate published an update on 22 September 2026 saying its draft AI Design Principles have been refined after feedback from more than 1,500 educators in 119 countries.
Two headline changes are notable. ‘Caring and balanced’ is now ‘Caring and protective: AI for human and planetary flourishing’. ‘Educator agency’ is now ‘Shared responsibility: across the IB ecosystem’.
STATUS: UPDATED DRAFT PRINCIPLES — NOT A GOVERNMENT RULE. The IB says the principles are moving into final review and will continue to evolve. They are not legislation and they are not a final binding policy.
WHAT COMES NEXT: The IB’s first toolkit priorities are an AI policy and governance template, AI literacy for educators, and guidance for student AI leadership councils. It is also finalising a white paper on its approach to AI in education.
WHY IT MATTERS: The update puts protection, shared responsibility, educator AI literacy and student participation at the centre of AI adoption in schools.
