What is confirmed

Kenya and Anthropic signed a Joint Declaration in New York on 22 September 2026. The framework covers AI skills and capacity building, research, responsible public-sector applications, AI safety and evaluation, and locally relevant applications in education and health.

Kenyan reporting says the next phase is expected to move into pilots, research initiatives and training programmes with Kenyan institutions. Future work involving data remains subject to Kenyan data-protection, cybersecurity and public-sector requirements.

Status check

CONFIRMED GOVERNMENT–COMPANY JOINT DECLARATION / COOPERATION FRAMEWORK. This is not legislation. It is not a binding school rule or curriculum mandate. It is also not yet a national education rollout: the education pilots and training programmes still have to be developed and implemented.

Why it matters for education

The agreement is significant because education is explicitly included in a national framework with a frontier AI company, alongside local skills, safety and institutional capacity. The practical effect will depend on the pilots and programmes that follow.
