Higher Education: Disability Categories and UDL Relevance
The most common disability categories among registered students in Irish higher education were Specific Learning Difficulty (38.8%), Mental Health Condition (21.2%), ADD/ADHD (15.2%), and Aspergers/Autism (12.3%). The majority of students with disabilities have conditions that are not immediately visible and may not be apparent to educators without disclosure. UDL's proactive approach to designing flexible learning environments benefits these students precisely because it does not require disclosure — the flexibility is built into the design for everyone.
