Multiple Means of Engagement — The WHY of Learning

Multiple Means of Engagement addresses the affective dimension of learning — how educators recruit and sustain learners' interest, motivation, and self-regulation. This principle recognises that learners differ markedly in what sparks their enthusiasm for learning, what sustains their effort in the face of difficulty, and how they manage their emotional responses to challenge. Practical strategies include offering choices in learning activities, connecting content to students' lived experiences and identities, providing clear and meaningful goals, fostering collaborative learning communities, and building students' capacity for self-regulation and metacognition.
