The Disability Act 2005 and Universal Design
The Disability Act (2005) established the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design (CEUD) within the National Disability Authority, with a remit to promote universal design across all sectors including education. The CEUD has been instrumental in developing guidelines, standards, and resources for implementing universal design in Irish educational institutions, and has collaborated with accreditation bodies such as Engineers Ireland and Quality Qualifications Ireland (QQI) to incorporate Universal Design principles into their criteria.
